May’s bringing that proper seasonal shift – lighter, greener and full of fresh energy. Locally, asparagus and New Forest strawberries are already in full swing joined by watercress, spring cabbage and plenty of leafy lines like lollo rosso, oakleaf and round lettuce, with rainbow chard adding a bit of colour. Bunched carrots are just starting to come through too. English crops are building nicely, with rhubarb, spring onions and Jersey Royals leading the charge, while Isle of Wight tomatoes are already well underway, with cucumbers, peppers and fresh peas beginning to follow through. Apricots and broad beans are on the horizon but expect those a little later. Meanwhile, we’re still seeing the tail end of the old season with staples like parsnips, leeks, swede, onions and potatoes ticking along in the background.
